Brampton was established as a village in 1853, with a population of 50, taking its name from the market town of Brampton, Cumbria, England. In 1873, with a population of 2,000, Brampton was declared a city. The town was once known as "The Town Town of Canada", which is an article about its huge house heating industry. At the beginning of the 21st century, Brampton's major sectors of the economy included advanced manufacturing technology, commercial management, asset management, information and communication technology, food and beverage, health science, and business services. Immigration, especially from the Indian subcontinent, has greatly increased the population of Brampton - from 10,000 in the 1950s to more than 600,000 today.
Brampton has grown into one of Canada's most diverse cities. In 1996, the city was 13% South Asian and 8.2% Black. in 2016, the South Asian population grew significantly to represent 44.3% of the city's population, while the black population grew to 14%. Responding to a growing multicultural society, the Peel Board of Education introduced evening English as a Second Language (ESL) courses in high schools. Originally taught by volunteers, the classes were eventually organized as afternoon classes taught by paid instructors. In the 1980s, the community and Catholic boards expanded their language programs, offering night classes in 23 languages. This was introduced at the request of parents, who want their children to learn the languages of their ancestors and their values.
Companies with headquarters in Brampton include Loblaw Companies Ltd. and Rogers Communications Inc., Chrysler Canada Brampton Assembly Plant, Maple Lodge Farms, Canadian Tire Corp, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Ltd., Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories, and Olymel LP, and former Zellers (offices and distribution).
International companies Brita, and Clorox have their Canadian headquarters in the city. It is also home to the Canadian Forces Army Reserve The Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin, and Halton Regiment).
Brampton is used by major transport routes: The 401 highway from Toronto is a short distance south of Mississauga and can be accessed by Highway 410, running northwest of the city center. Highway 407 runs in the southern part of the city, north of the Mississauga border. Steeles Avenue, running north of 407, is another route from Toronto. Main Street, part of the historic highway, Hurontario Street, and formerly Highway 10, is the main artery north of the south. The former Road 7, (now Regional Road 107) is another east-west corridor, connecting the eastern part of Queen Street (which is the city's main east-west road) and the western part of Bovaird Drive.
