Portland the largest and most populous city in the US state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. A large port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, where the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet in Northwestern Oregon. As of 2019, Portland had an estimated population of 654,741, making it the 26th most populous city in the United States, the sixth most populous on the West Coast, and the second most populous in the Pacific Northwest behind Seattle. About 2.4 million people live in Portland's metropolitan area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous place in the United States. Its Combined Statistics Center (CSA) ranks among the 19 largest with a population of approximately 3.2 million. About 47% of Oregon's population lives within the capital city of Portland.
Named after Portland, Maine, Oregon's settlement began to overflow in the 1830's near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its availability in the water provided easy transportation, and the lumber industry played a major role in the ancient city's economy. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was known as one of the world's most dangerous cities in the world, a center for organized crime and fraud. After the city's industrialization expanded during World War II, its strong reputation waned. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland was known for its growing political values, which gained a reputation as an agricultural hub.
The ports alone carry more than 13 million tons of cargo a year, and the port is home to one of the largest dry commercial ports in the country. The Port of Portland is the third largest export port on the west coast of the U.S., and about 130 miles [130 km] above the river, it is the largest freshwater port.
The history of the steel industry in Portland preceded World War II. In the 1950's, the steel industry became the city's first rental industry. The steel industry is booming in the region, with Schnitzer Steel Industries, a leading steel company, exporting 1.15 billion discarded steel records to Asia in 2003. Other heavy industry companies include ESCO Corporation and Oregon Steel Mills.
Technology is a major factor in the city's economy, with more than 1,200 technology companies located within the metropolitan area. This high density of technology companies has led to the use of the Silicon Forest nickname to describe the Portland area, which is a reference to the abundance of trees in the region and the Silicon Valley region of Northern California. The site also has facilities for software companies and online startup companies, some of which are supported by local seed-based organizations and business affiliates. Intel computer manufacturer is the largest employer in the Portland area, providing jobs for more than 15,000 people, with several campuses west of Portland in the city of Hillsboro.
