Explorer Juan Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claims to have discovered San Diego Bay in 1542, almost 200 years before Europeans settled in the area; in fact, Native Americans like the Kumeyaay people lived in this area for about 12,000 years before the existence of Europe.
The fort and mission was founded in 1769, which gradually grew into a settlement under the first Spanish empire and then a Mexican one. San Diego officially became part of the US in 1848, and the city was named after the state of San Diego County when California was annexed by the state in 1850. It remained a very small town for decades, but grew rapidly after 1880 due to the development and establishment of many military bases. Growth was rapid during and shortly after World War II. Entrepreneurs and developers lay the foundation for today's economy based in the military, defense, tourism, international trade and manufacturing industries. San Diego is now the eighth largest city in the country and forms the heart of San Diego's largest city.

About 5 percent of all military activity in the region is military-related, with 15,000 businesses in San Diego County relying on Department of Defense agreements.
San Diego's commercial port and its location on the United States-Mexico border make international trade an important part of the city's economy. The city is authorized by the United States government to operate as a Foreign Trade Area.
