San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776, when Spanish colonies established the San Francisco Presidio at Golden Gate and Mission San Francisco de Asís a few miles away, both named after Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time. San Francisco became an integral city in 1856. San Francisco's status as the largest city on the West Coast grew between 1870 and 1900, when about 25% of Californians lived in the city fairly. After three quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, holding the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was a major port.
The famous resort, San Francisco is known for its cool summers, fog, rolling hills, eclectic mix of buildings, and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Fisherman's Wharf, and its region of Chinatown. San Francisco is also the headquarters of companies such as Twitter, Square, Airbnb, Levi Strauss & Co., Gap Inc., Salesforce, Dropbox, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Uber, and Lyft. The city, and the surrounding Bay Area, is a global center of science and art and is home to many educational and cultural institutions, such as the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the University of San Francisco (USF), San Francisco State University (SFSU) ), Young Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, SFJAZZ Center, and California Academy of Sciences…

Like many U.S. cities, San Francisco once had an important manufacturing sector that employed about 60,000 workers in 1969, but almost all production remained in the low-cost areas of the 1980's. Since 2014, San Francisco has seen a slight resurgence in production, with more than 4,000 manufacturing jobs in 500 companies, doubled since 2011. The largest producer of production in the city is Anchor Brewing Company, and the largest with Timbuk2 revenue.
San Francisco became the site of technological growth driven by the internet boom in the 1990s, and still holds a key position in the global city network today. Major reconstruction.
