History of Des Moines, IA

Des Moines is the largest and most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. And it is the regional chair of Polk County. A small part of the city reaches Warren County. It was compiled on September 22, 1851, as Fort Des Moines, which was reduced to "Des Moines" in 1857. It is located and named after the Des Moines River, possibly derived from the original French name, Rivière des Moines, meaning "River of the Monks".
