   History of Gary, IN

Gary is a town in Lake County, Indiana, USA, 25 miles [40 km] from downtown Chicago, Illinois. Gary is close to Indiana Dunes National Park and cuts south of Lake Michigan. Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, the first chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. After all the white plane carries the highest percentage of African Americans. The town is known for its large steel mills and as the birthplace of the Jackson family.

The population of Gary was 74,789, up from the 2019 census, making it the ninth largest city in the state of Indiana. When it became a thriving steel city, it lost much of its population due to maritime competition and industrial restructuring, falling 55 percent from its peak of 178,320 in 1960. Like many cities in the Rust Belt, it is plagued by unemployment, decaying infrastructure, and low literacy rates. It is estimated that about one third of all the houses in the city are unoccupied or abandoned.

The Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) is a passenger bus system that provides services to many city stops and surrounding suburbs. The GPTC also has a service to highlight areas outside the city, including communications and travel in Chicago. The front van is available to disabled citizens at no additional cost.

Gary / Chicago International Airport serves as the "third airport" of the Chicago area. With the new road, a large number of military-sponsored expansions were undertaken, and management took over the aircraft. The National Guard intends to establish its operations in the Chicago area there.

Interstate 90 (90, Indiana Toll Road), 80, 94, and I-65 via Gary, as well as US Highway 6 (US 6), US 12 and US 20, and State Road 912 (SR 912, Cline Avenue). The previous extension of SR 312 has been suspended.

The North Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) operates the South Shore Line, a passenger train system between Chicago and South Bend. It is one of the last railway systems in the US.

The city is located at the southern end of the former Lake Chicago prefecture and present Lake Michigan. Much of the city's soil, about one foot below the surface, is clean sand. The sand beneath Gary, as well as its beaches, has such volume and quality that companies for over a century have dug it, especially on glassmaking.
