Windsor took over the three cities in 1935. The nearby Ojibway and Riverside valleys were merged in 1913 and 1921, respectively. Both were connected by Windsor in 1966. During the 1920's, alcohol bans were imposed in Michigan while alcohol was legal in Ontario. The practice of rum in Windsor was a common practice at the time.
On October 25, 1960, a massive gas explosion destroyed a building that housed the Metropolitan Store on Ouellette Avenue. Ten people were killed and at least 100 were injured. Windsor Star commemorated the 45th anniversary of the event on October 25, 2005. It was featured in the Historic Television Disaster of the Century.
Windsor Star Centennial Edition in 1992 covered the city's past, its success as a railway station, and its contributions to World War I and efforts to combat World War II. It also recalled the naming dispute in 1892 when Windsor intended to be a city. The most popular names listed in the naming contest were "South Detroit", "The Ferry" (from boats linking Windsor and Detroit), Windsor, and Richmond (who ran for fame). Windsor was chosen to promote the legacy of new English settlers in the city and to recognize Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England. Richmond, however, was a popular term that was used until World War II, especially local mail.
Windsor's economy is largely based on manufacturing, tourism, education and government services.
The city is one of the largest automotive manufacturing centers in Canada and is home to the CAFA Canada headquarters. Automotive services include the FCA Canadian taxi assembly site, two Ford Motor Company engine plants, as well as a specific tool and die and car parts manufacturers.
Windsor has a well-established tourism industry. Caesars Windsor, one of Canada's largest casinos, is one of the largest local employers. It has been a major attraction for U.S. tourists since its opening in 1994 (as Casino Windsor). In addition, the 1,150 km (710 mi) Quebec City - Windsor Corridor consists of 18 million people, 51% of Canadians and three of the five largest metropolitan areas, according to the 2011 Census. The economy is diverse and is represented by companies involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing, alternative energy, insurance, the internet and software. Windsor is also home to the Windsor Salt Mine and the Great Lakes regional office of the International Joint Commission.
Windsor is an absolute powerhouse in the Canadian logistics and transportation market as evidenced by all the companies that choose to do business within the city limits from the Pharmaceutical industry all the way to being a major player when it comes to auto parts and auto production. It is clear as day that trucks need to move goods in Windsor to other parts of the country or even into the United states in order to make sure that the supply chains are functioning at full capacity and to ensure that Windsor can keep delivering this value to its stakeholders and customers Dynafix is here to help with all 24/7 truck and trailer repair needs.
