From the trading area of the Hudson's Bay Company (Fort Garry) in 1870, with a population of 215, Winnipeg is expected to grow to the size of a first-class city of 663,617 people (2011 Census). When the city was installed in 1873 there were 1,869 inhabitants. In 1878 the merger of the train from St. Paul, Minnesota, had reached a point just across the river from Winnipeg; then on July 1, 1886, the first train, leaving Montreal on June 28, 1886, arrived in Winnipeg. The advent of rail connections brought about a steady flow of commodities and trade and an influx of people that led to the construction of a standing City with a value that surpassed only a few Canadian cities.
Winnipeg has become an important cereal center on the American continent, a financial center, a commercial, wholesale and manufacturing center in the midwest, due to its location and the size of the main railway, branches reaching all sides. It provides excellent trade opportunities for the province and the Northwest and contributes to the establishment of industries and other industries. The availability of soft water in Winnipeg is sufficient for the needs of a city of millions.
The day of installation came, but not without a struggle. The first bill introduced in the Legislature for the inclusion of the City was thrown out and the townspeople took the Speaker of the House and gave him a tarred bathroom. However, cool heads were successful and under the direction of the law, the Bill was passed. The City Government was governed by a special Charter which was submitted to the Provincial Legislature. This document was abolished in 1886, and from then until 1902 City matters were handled under the provisions of the Manitoba Municipal and Assessment Act. The City also received a special revised edition in 1918, 1940, and 1956.
Today, Winnipeg is known for its excellent hotel and car lodges and fine restaurants. It has excellent shopping malls, "A Shopper's Paradise", and is one of the few Canadian cities that does not charge regular sales tax. You have enjoyed this difference for ninety-two years.
Over the years Winnipegs economy has shifted and evolved but being a major distributor of grains makes it one of the largest transportation hubs in the world. The main reason for this is simple, grain is one of the most important resources for the food supply. Dynafix understands the local Winnipeg economy and are here to help providing support to truckers who made Winnipeg what it is today!
